Hidden far up in the mountains, toward the Eritrean border, Adwa was the site of a historic battle. In 1896, Ethiopian forces crushed an attempted Italian invasion, making Ethiopia the first and only African country to have won a war against a European country. The victory allowed Ethiopia to maintain its status as the only African country never to have been colonized!
