Luanda, the capital of Angola, was once named the “Paris of Africa”. After being surrounded by a 25-year long civil war, it hardly fits that name anymore. Built for a population of 50 000, the city now has close to 5 000 000 inhabitants, and infrastructure is dillapidated at best. There are signs of development though. Thanks to a government that takes good care of its ministers, and friends of the president, SUVs are everywhere, and their posh villas with swimming pools crowd the gated compounds outside the city. Once those selfless servants of the people have their needs met, they may perhaps one day start thinking about the people who never voted for them in elections never held.
