Zanzibar

The capital of Zanzibar was a regional centre of power as well as a hub for slave trade in the pre-colonial days. Today it is more than anything a centre of modern Swahili culture, with well-preserved architecture and and a tranquil but business-minded atmosphere.

While Nungwi is the usual destination for tourists visiting Zanzibar, any of the other villages on the island will offer a much more direct insight into the authentic Zanzibari culture. In addition to that, all other places will give you a much better price/comfort ratio than Nungwi.
