Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant

A thrilling cave restaurant in the South Coast of Kenya

It had been 10 years since our last visit to Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant.

Back then, in 2007, the place was a hidden, romantic, and generally unknown gem.  Even most visitors in Diani hadn’t heard about it, and it was only thanks to the recommendation of a friend, that we even included it in our itinerary.

Today, the place features prominently on the lists of the most spectacular restaurants in Africa, and in the world.

The restaurant is located in a natural coral cave 10 meters under the ground. The scenery is stunningly unique, with an unforgettable setting for a romantic couple’s dinner.  The subtly dimmed lighting consists mostly of Middle Eastern-style lanterns, creating an incredible atmosphere.

Great service, nice food

Waiters are extremely attentive, something you cannot take for granted at restaurants in this part of the world.  Swift service is really another great plus with this place.

Being located in Diani, Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant obviously features a wide selection of seafood.  Most items on the menu are nice, and in some cases even delicious, but not outstanding. With a rather basic wine list, this place is definitely not Michelin star material.  The total dining experience is nevertheless unique.

Strangely, I have never seen this restaurant very crowded. Tourism in South Coast has been on a low for some years, though. It seems to be recovering, though. In any case, it is always a good idea to book in advance.
